MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA

On the occasion of the official opening of the renovated mosque and the school premises of Habibia, it gives me great joy to be able to send you a warm message of greeting and support.

The occasion is a historic one for Habibia and for all sections of the formerly disenfranchised groups. It is of course of particular significance for the Muslim community in South Africa and the Cape in particular. Your celebrations take place at a time when you are also commemorating the centenary of the arrival of the founder of the mosque, Hazrat Shah Ghulam Muhammad Sufi (generally known to all as Sufi Sahib).

From my personal interactions with Muslims in various parts of our beloved country, it is clear to me that Sufi Sahib was a revered religious leader who gave his whole life to serving Islam and humanity in general. He was a champion of the downtrodden. His life and achievements represents an example for all South Africans. Together with you, I honour his memory.

The Habibia Mosque complex also represents a great example of self-help-an example of how determined people who suffered oppression and deprivations, can raise themselves to uplift the community and educate and care for their children. Habibia’s contribution in the religious social and educational spheres is well known. It is an example from which all our people can learn.

My personal memory of the institution goes back to the 40s and 50s. I used to visit the Cape as part of my work in the African National Congress during the struggle for the liberations of all our people. One of the areas I visited is Athlone. I remember an occasion in the 1950’s when, under very difficult semi-underground conditions, we were looking for places to meet. We were provided with a venue in what was then known as Doringhoogte. There were hardly any buildings or indeed streets in the area, but the Habibia Mosque was there.

And so, on the occasion of your great celebrations, let us remember those who over the years in their own way made a contribution to building this institution and creating a facility, which has always been open to people of all religions and of all races. May Habibia continue to flourish and enjoy the support of all our people, for indeed it is there to serve all of us. I greet you all.

NELSON MANDELA
