Al-Imam Al-Hafidh Jalaluddeen As-Suyuti RA, one of the greatest scholars of Islam says in Al-Hawi Lil Fatawa: “To commemorate the Mawlid, which is basically gathering people together, reciting parts of the Qu'ran, narrating stories about the Prophet's birth and the signs that accompanied it, then serving food, and afterwards, departing, is one of the good innovations; and the one who practices it gets rewarded, because it involves venerating the status of the Prophet and expressing joy at his honourable birth.”

Allah SWT says in the Holy Qur'aan in Surah Al-Baqarah, at the end of the verse on the month of Ramadaan: [And so that you can complete the prescribed period of fasting, glorify Allah for the guidance that He has given you, and perhaps you will be of those who have gratitude to Him.]

Eidul Fitr is a day for those who have observed the fasting of the entire month of Ramadaan to celebrate. It is a day for us to celebrate the praises of our Creator and to glorify Him, for us support the poor and the needy and for us to spend time with our families.

We have to be careful of what we do, on this day especially, as Rasoolullah SAW has said: "Whosoever disobeys Allah on the day of Eid, it is as if he has disobeyed Him on the Day of Reckoning.]

Therefore, we have to carry out the commands of Allah in the way we live, the way we dress, the way we conduct ourselves and in every aspect and moment of our lives; not only on the day of Eid or during the month of Ramadaan, but every single day.

The Eid program started at Habibia Soofie Masjid at 07:45 am with a lecture by Sheikh Goolam Hafiz Rooknodien. The Masjid was full to capacity and people were seated also outside on the carpets provided. The lecture was for about 30 minutes and then the announcements were made before the Salaah started. Hafiz Mas`ood Ahmad Kagee lead the congregation in Salaatul Eid, following the school of thought (Madhab) of Imam Shafi`i RA. The Khutbah was delivered after the Salaah and then everyone exchanged greetings and wished each other well for the day.

The Jumu`ah program consisted of a recital of the Holy Qur'aan by Qari Zubayr Barday, in place of the lecture. The Khutbah was delivered by Imam Goolam Hoosain Parker and the Salaah was lead by Qari Zubayr Barday.

The day as a whole went well and we thank Allah SWT for giving us the opportunity to have a joyous Eidul Fitr. We appeal to Him to ease the plights and suffering of the Muslims around the world, including the poor and the needy.

At the same time, we should give as much as possible in order to ease their suffering, as our Beloved Prophet SAW has said: "Whosoever enlightens an ordeal from a Muslim in this world, Allah will enlighten one of his ordeals on the Day of Accountability."
