He is the eldest son of Moulana Goolam Qutboodien Kagee. He matriculated at Belgravia High School and studied Tajweed under Sheikh Fu`aad Gabier. He pursued his studies further in Makkatul Mukarramah, where he completed Hifz (memorisation) of the Holy Qur'aan. He returned in 1412 (1991) and has been serving this institution ever since. He is actively involved in teaching students the Holy Qur'aan and Islam at Habibia Soofie Masjid, as the principal of the Institute for the studies of the Holy Qur'aan (established in 1996). Hafiz Mas'ood is instrumental in leading and organizing the annual Taraweeh Salaah at the Masjid.
